Soil to Sustenance: Supporting Farmers and Families in SC

In response to the pandemic, which caused chaotic and stressful circumstances for local farmers and residents alike, we launched the Soil to Sustenance food box program, which sought to help fill the need for donated fresh produce to food pantry partners across the Lowcountry. We were humbled by the great outpouring of support from the community for this effort, and with this generosity, we have been able to donate 120,000 pounds of produce thus far, serving approximately 2,000 Charleston-area families.

These boxes goto some of the most vulnerable populations in our community, such as the residents of Bridgeview Village, an affordable housing community located in a food desert area of North Charleston. Many recipients express joy at receiving fresh fruits and vegetables in a donation and shared that this is rarely the case. Often, well-meaning but under-resourced food pantries can only provide imperfect canned goods, junk food, or other processed items. With this type of continued need in our communities, we intend to offer the program for the long term.
