Offering Spay/Neuter surgeries for pets of low-income caretakers has lowered intake at Huntsville Animal Services by 50%.

Many people say that if someone can’t afford to take care of a pet, then they shouldn’t have one. That’s a really good point. But many cats and dogs are abandoned. Or someone’s cat just wanders off and has a litter of kittens. This is especially common in low-income areas.
These animals get hungry and come to people for food and affection. A caring person will feed them. And then it may be hard to part with them. So, they have a pet.
Most people want to do the best they can for these pets. SNAP makes it possible for them to have their pet spayed or neutered and vaccinated against rabies. That helps the pet and the caretaker. It also reduces the intake at Huntsville Animal Services.
Since our program began, we have provided more than 18,000 spay/neuter surgeries for pets of low-income caretakers in our community. The result has been a 50% reduction in the number of animals entering Huntsville Animal Services.
