Overcoming the Traumas of War

Tom, a US Army Infantry Veteran, at Veterans Alternative sharing his story with staff.

I served 8 years in the US Army Infantry from 2001-2009 and spent a total of 31 months in combat during the Iraq War from 2003-2005. I was wounded during Operation Phantom Fury while fighting to retake the city of Fallujah in November of 2004. Since my time in the service I have suffered from extreme PTSD, homelessness and addiction. I heard about Veterans Alternative through a friend at one of the NA groups I attend regularly and decided to look into it further. I was honestly skeptical about Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) at first, as I have tried so many other avenues to find relief. I wasn't sure this could actually help me. After my first session of ART, it was like a physical weight had been lifted off of me. There were plenty of tears on my part during the session but I was made to feel so comfortable and safe that I was able to talk about things I had never shared with anyone. I felt like I found a home. That night was the first time in 16 years that I slept the entire night through. I couldn't believe the change after only one day. I believe Veterans Alternative and its staff saved my life and helped me find peace were before was only pain, they gave me hope and healing. Since leaving their program I have been able to stay clean and sober and enrolled in school. To top it off, I have been fortunate enough to create and maintain friendships I hope will last a lifetime. I continue to receive counseling every couple weeks and have been made to feel like a part of the family. I highly recommend this program to any veteran suffering from combat trauma and have repeatedly done so. I can honestly say I don’t know where I would be if it wasn't for Veterans Alternative and their amazing staff. I owe them my deepest gratitude - Tom
