My Breast Cancer Journey

Fear and Faith

Nadia is a 56-year-old wife and mother who went for her routine mammogram and was informed that she needed further imaging including a biopsy. Nadia stated she was consumed with terror and panic. This was a major wake up call, she was in America, no job, no insurance and they had gone through their savings.

Nadia put the additional charges on her credit card and went home feeling terrified of what’s next. Cancer? She didn’t have the financial resources to help cover any potential cost. Karen at the imaging center told Nadia about the Bridge Breast Network (BBN). She explained how BBN provides treatment to uninsured, low-income individuals and how they help save lives. Nadia went home to wait for the biopsy results and around 8 pm the phone rang and she heard the words “you have breast cancer”. Nadia said “I was speechless. The following days the shock set in; I felt a sense of fear like never before. In less than 24 hrs. my life was no longer the same! My inner voice said: Nadia, your diagnosis is just the beginning of the journey and coping with the practical matters will be challenging. Your faith is important. My next step was to meet with BBN. They were so welcoming, caring and understanding. I immediately felt like I was in the right place. I felt this was Divine Intervention and that my prayers had been answered.”

BBN provided Nadia with surgery, radiation oncology and follow-up. BBN and clients like Nadia are grateful to donors like you for making it possible to provide early detection and treatment services for uninsured women (men) in North Texas.
