Making the Move

Cheryl served in the Army from 2001-2003. She was discharged in 2003 and returned to Atlanta to raise her three children as a single parent.

After falling on difficult financial times, Cheryl was told by her landlord that he no longer wanted to rent his house and that she needed to purchase or vacate her home of five years. She reached out to the VA One-Stop Clinic for help and was then referred to Voluntary Services. With her VA referral, Cheryl was provided temporary hotel assistance while seeking permanent housing. This proved to be a difficult task as she did not have immediate funds available for a down payment, and she needed to be close to her teenage daughter’s school district.

The Warrior Alliance was contacted by Cheryl to assist her with all of the challenges of searching and locating available HUD housing that met her specific needs. After several months, she secured a deposit for a new home through the help of United Way’s Private Veteran fund. TWA then connected Cheryl to the Truist financial wellness program to provide education and counseling on budgeting and establishing a plan for the future.

Cheryl and her family are now in stable housing, and she completed CDL school to secure transportation employment. Getting into financial difficulties that lead to housing challenges is a shared concern for many Warriors in transition. Using the support of the TWA Navigation team and a community of partners, Cheryl took the initiative to change her quality of life and has moved on to a new path with a bright future!
